Red/Blue Web?

Mark Cuban, who does have a pretty interesting blog, summed up his feeling that all things Web will eventually be colored by various political, religious, and philosophical bents:

"The Web 3.0 - You stay on your side of the web and I will stay on mine." [ American Idol of Search - your search isn't my search(More)

Frank N.G. Schulz

A moment of silence for Frank N.G. (no good or nice guy -- your choice) Schulz.

...

I've often heard people discuss pro-creation as a form of cheating death but that particular motivation has never been high on my list. Even now that my son is a real live boy instead of theory I don't really see him as my bid for immortality.

But when my Grandfather passed away this weekend after a great glorious long life of plane flying, card playing, and crooked smiles holding Michael in my arms was of great comfort. Nothing makes you feel better about loosing one life then holding in your arms all the promise of a new life.

Its hard to feel sad when a 9 month old goes crawling after a mechanical monkey on wheels across the living room floor and I know that Grandpa would not have wanted us to be sad for long.

H.R. 4569 -- Digital Conversion Illegal?

Robert X. Cringely (love the name) wrote recently about new legislation that would make analog-to-digital conversion illegal unless digital rights management were incorporated into the system. [ Nothing Changes -- Dec. 22 -- about half way down the page ]

I respect Mr. Cringely greatly and generally agree that government needs to stay out of technology fields. This needs watching.

Ego alert

A late entry into the 2006 F1 Championships is being made by Suzuki Team Super Aguri. So where does the team name come from? Team principal Aguri Suzuki.

I guess his last name is the name of the company, but still. Maybe I should rename my fantasy football team, Super Doug. Or maybe translate that into Japanesse maybe it doesn't sound so dorky then.

@#@# It

I think Washington should have a baseball team. I was very excited to have the National in town last year. I planned to support them.

But sometimes in an effort to get something you want, you have to back up and say @#@# it, its not worth it. [ Nats Bidders Told Not to Offer Funds -- Washington Post ]

My message to MLB --

"Take your precious little baseball franchise and move them to San Juan and see if you can get an ownership group to bid for them then. @#@# You."

The Business

I just finished The Business by Iain Banks. While the world each novel takes place in is very different (late 1990's Earth vs. a galaxy far far away) it reminded me in tone of Against a Dark Background by Iain M. Banks. I am 99.999% sure that those are the same people.

Penguins New Coach

To think I was excited about hockey in Pittsburgh over the summer. Then they started playing and losing games. Now 2 games into a new coach I have to like their chances for a rebound. Why?

I know exactly one thing about new coach Michel Therrien: he's got a great French-Canadian name. Therefor, he must be good. Go Pens.

Intelligent Design = Creationism

Update on the Intelligent Design court case:

"Pennsylvania science teachers will not be forced to advocate "intelligent design" after a judge ruled that that the theory is really religion in disguise. ... As such, it is primarily a religious theory, not a scientific one, and cannot be taught in US public schools, which are prevented from promoting religion." (New Scientist)

I wrote about this case at length when it opened (Science and Religion | Sept. 26) and will only add now that this is a welcome decision. Yea.

Got Parity?

Common wisdom is that the NFL has parity and Baseball does not. As a fan of a small market with teams in both leagues I certainly endorse that view with my gut.

However, I read an interesting column a while back that argued against this established belief.

Good Books

I've read a great run of books lately mostly because some of my favorite authors have come through with some gems lately.

Car for Christmas

Everyone who is getting someone a car for Christmas raise your hand. I thought so. Admittedly I am not in the right tax bracket to buy a Lexis at any time let alone for someone else. But really. Does anyone do that?

Please, share stories of anyone you know or have heard about who got a car for Christmas, of any kind.

Puerto Rico for 2

... the game that is. I Love Puerto Rico but my usual number of players for games is two. So J and I created a 2 player modification that I think works pretty well. (If you haven't played Puerto Rico, this post will largely be lost on you.)
